Some of the best objects to look at are:
- Planets
- Comets
- The Moon
The planets are always a nice challange to tackel with your pair of binoculars. While you can't see much detail in the planets you can see some color; for instance mars appears red. Check out a star chart to find out what planets are currently visible in your area and then get out the pair of binoculars and do some searching.
Comets:
Is a comet currently visible in your area? If so comets provide a great challenge for those with good binoculars.
The Moon:
The main thing about observing the moon is that the full moon is not the best time for moongazing. The best place to view mountains, craters, and valleys is to look at the area around the light-dark boundary of a moon that's not full. This is the region of the moon where the sun is about to set, so everything casts a long shadow, making it easier to see relief from the earth. Once you get past the "gee whiz" stage of lunar observing, you will get more enjoyment by referring to a book that gives maps and relates the features to the moon's geology to what you see.
